Wall stations are a simple, easy to install, low cost, safe and accurate way of establishing control in hard rock underground mines. A wall station is a two-part system.
1. A prism attached to a stem.
2. A small hole drilled into the wall of a drive or stope with a piece of aluminium tube inside it.
The aluminium tube is mounted in the wall permanently. The prism and stem are inserted during the survey and removed afterwards.
This system is robust, with only the aluminium sleeve left in the wall underground. It is easily sighted and measured too and precisely creates the reference point every time.

All Civil (Tunnel) and Underground Mine Surveyors can use wall stations, the only requirement is the walls must be stable, movement in walls will effect the accuracy of any surveys coming off these points.

Wall stations create reference points, it is not possible to set up on, over or under these points. Resection is used to survey from these reference points.
For a more detailed answer to this question read the wall station overview document.

To use wall stations successfully you will need a Leica Total Station. This can be any professional model ranging from the TPS1000 series through to the TPS1200 series. The most popular type of instrument used in Underground mines is either the TCRA1105 or TCRA1103 from the TPS1100 series or the TCRA1205 or TCRA1203 from the TPS1200 series. All models from these series can be used, but the instruments with the ATR (Automatic Target Recognition) have been found to be the most productive. Speak to your local Leica agent if you do not have an instrument.
You will require wall stations stems and tubing. These can be purchased from C.R. Kennedy and Co. (Australian agents for Leica Geo Systems).
You will also require Leica Prisms. These prisms must be used as they are optical centered.

You will need to have Surpac Vision mining software and MSO (Mine Survey Office). This will enable you to seamlessly process, create and view all data required for wall stations surveying. It will also give you a complete audit trail of your data. Download and test it for yourself.
